Lore & History

The legendary journey of gaming's most iconic hero

The Origin of a Legend

Mario's story begins in 1981 in arcades across the world. Before he had his iconic name, the character was known as Jumpman - a stocky little figure in red overalls tasked with rescuing a woman named Pauline from a barrel-throwing ape called Donkey Kong. That single-screen arcade cabinet kicked off one of the most beloved franchises in entertainment history.

From Jumpman to Mario (1983)

Two years after Donkey Kong, Nintendo officially named the character Mario in Mario Bros. (1983) on the NES. This side-scrolling platformer introduced his brother Luigi and established the core dynamic of cooperative two-player gaming that would define the series for decades.

The NES Era That Changed Everything (1985)

Super Mario Bros. on the NES in 1985 is one of the most important video games ever made. It rescued the North American games industry from the crash of 1983, introduced the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Bowser, Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and the concept of warp zones. The platformer genre as we know it was defined by this single release.

The SNES Golden Age (1990)

Super Mario World launched alongside the Super Nintendo in 1990 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest platformers ever made. It introduced Yoshi - Mario's loyal dinosaur companion - and the Cape Feather power-up. The series continued expanding across every Nintendo console generation that followed.

The Leap to 3D (1996)

Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 in 1996 was the first fully three-dimensional platformer in the series - and arguably the most influential 3D game ever released. It invented the analog-stick camera control paradigm that virtually every 3D game since has followed. This was not just a new Mario game - it was a new kind of game entirely.

Galaxy, Odyssey, and the Modern Era (2007 - Today)

Super Mario Galaxy on Wii in 2007 brought gravity-defying platforming to a new generation of players. Super Mario Odyssey on Nintendo Switch in 2017 introduced Cappy, a sentient hat that lets Mario possess enemies and objects. The series reached its latest chapter with Super Mario Bros. Wonder in 2023 - a wild, joyful love letter to everything the franchise has ever been.
